Reblog: 20 Years in Business and Still Growing

At Fibrenew, we are big on supporting one another. In doing that, we would like to share spotlight interviews with our franchisees. Today we are looking at Dan Hoffman and his Fibrenew Portland franchise in Portland, Oregon.

Dan has been a part of the Fibrenew family since 1995. Born into a family of mechanics, the automotive industry seemed a likely fit for Dan. But after spending some time as a paramedic/firefighter, he opted to start his own Fibrenew Franchise. Today, Fibrenew Portland is a multi-unit business with a hired technician, Dan’s son, and Dan himself. In the next 5-7 years, once his son is done school, his plan is to add more technicians and expand his business. Even after 20 years of operation in the Portland market, Dan recognizes that there is still plenty of room to grow.

Dan says one of the reasons he selected Fibrenew was the quality of leather, plastic and vinyl restoration products and the proven franchise business model. That and the flexibility of being an owner / operator and what that meant for his family’s lifestyle. . . continue reading!

From Banker to Business Owner, Fibrenew Franchisee Takes Charge

Josh Colwell admits he felt stuck in his former career. As a banking professional, his days were habitual, standardized routines where he was confined to his office. “I enjoy people, but the banking system isn’t really about that,” he explains. For 10 years he plugged along, supporting his wife as she started her online retail business. Colwell looked here and there for new opportunities that would allow for more interaction with people, and after reconnecting with an old friend he finally found what he was looking for.

Daniel Sheetz owned a thriving Fibrenew franchise and invited Colwell to join the business as his technician. Wanting to return to his farming background, Sheetz was looking for someone with passion and drive to take over Fibrenew Central Iowa as leader in leather, plastic and vinyl restoration. Colwell found the hands-on, creative problem solving elements of his technician’s role as a welcome surprise. “It was something that was missing from my day-to-day life. I really enjoyed it.”

Ten months into his technician’s role, Colwell purchased the business. “It was the right time. I knew it was an opportunity that doesn’t come along often, so I figured, ‘Let’s go.’” With the support of his wife, he has earnestly embraced his new role as entrepreneur, setting — and achieving — high standards for his Fibrenew Central Iowa franchise. The quality of the brand is something Colwell takes pride in being part of. “I am a big believer in our products and what we do. The [Fibrenew] trainers and support team help push me to another level of proficiency and raise my standards.” read more!

Franchise Collaboration Helps You Develop Your Business

The appeal of a franchise might stem from the fact that working systems are already in place; that the product or service has been tested, tweaked and perfected; and that the brand is already known and established. But often lost in the shuffle, there’s one aspect of a franchise system that may be as important to your success, if not more so: the franchisees.

Beyond the knowledge and resources available to you from the franchisor, you have a whole network of franchisees who have forged the way and are ready to help get you up to speed. They are experienced, skilled and can even add to your work force when extra hands are needed. Take Fibrenew franchise business, Bill Metropol and Stan Zawko, for example. The two are banding together to tackle a project that would have been too big for either of them to do alone.

So how do you tap into your network of fellow franchisees? We asked franchise insiders to share some pointers on how to successfully benefit from the wisdom of other franchisees.

Before buying, investigate existing franchisee relationships. Ask the franchisor for examples where franchisees worked together, ask franchisees about their interactions with other franchisees in the system, and examine the quality of the relationships in the franchise that you’re considering. Ollie Parker took two trips to visit franchise locations before he opened his own Speedpro Imaging studio. “That helped me better understand the business,” explains Parker. “But more importantly, it helped me develop relationships with other owners so that when I have a problem, there is a wide range of talented and experienced owners I feel comfortable calling.”

“One of the marks of a good franchise system is how collaboratively the franchisees work together,” says Brian Miller, COO and President of The Entrepreneur's Source, a career and franchise business coaching company. “Whether it is informally or through a franchisor sponsored program, the more the franchisees work together, the greater the chance to grow the brand and market presence.”

Be proactive in meeting other franchisees. Make an effort to get in contact with other franchisees early on so that you can better be prepared later when you need advice and assistance. In Northern California’s Bay Area, five Floor Coverings International franchisees have united to form the Bay Area FCI Association. Meeting monthly, they help each other with staffing, discuss pricing, and recently signed a lease together on a shared warehouse that will allow them to buy in bulk and, therefore, be more competitive.

Jake Johnson, Director of Franchise Support at Fibrenew recommends meeting others in any way possible even if it’s just inviting franchisees in your area out for coffee. Meanwhile, Miller of The Entrepreneur’s Source says attending regional and annual meetings and conventions, as well as participating in conference calls and webinars, are great ways to establish relationships with others.

Use the tools that the franchisor has in place to foster and build relationships between franchisees. Speedpro Imaging has a buddy system that originally helped connect Parker, whose Speedpro franchise is based in Boston, with Scott Schoner, based in New Jersey. Parker relied on Schoner to process about 50 orders over a six-month period while he scouted out a location and got the necessary equipment in place. “I would not have been able to start my business without Scott’s help,” says Parker.

At Fibrenew, franchisees actively ask questions and connect with other franchisees via forums on the franchise’s intranet. “Use the resources available to you,” says Johnson. “That is the single biggest strength of the franchise model.”

Be willing to learn from other franchisees. A huge benefit of investing in a franchise system is the fact that you do not have to reinvent the wheel. Look to other franchisees to help steer you clear of any pitfalls along the way. “When you're starting up a franchise location, don't underestimate how much there is that you don't yet know,” says Johnson. “Other franchisees can serve as an excellent source of knowledge, and those near you may even step in and lend a hand when you need it down the road.”

Knowledge, ideas, and resources can be found everywhere, even from franchisees belonging to other systems. “There are a large number of franchises out there, so don't limit yourself to talking to folks just within your own organization,” says Todd Lafrentz, a member of the Bay Area FCI Franchisee Association. “Other franchises also have systems in place and processes that can easily be adapted to your business.”

Find strength in numbers. “I think it is vitally important in today's marketplace that we work together collaboratively,” says Lafrentz. “Our collective sum, from both a financial and experience perspective, makes [our franchisee group] exponentially more effective than individual owners. We are already starting to pool resources to provide a larger presence in the online marketplace, which has started to pay dividends to each of us after a very short time. In the future, I think we [will] have additional opportunities in more of traditional media outlets such as radio and television that, as individuals, would be difficult to swing.”

Collaborating with fellow franchisees gives your business an edge, so take advantage of the network of support that’s available to you.

How to prevent and remove oil damage to leather furniture

One of the worst things to eat on leather couches is buttered popcorn – yes, the all-time favorite movie snack. What a bummer.

Unfortunately, folks, leather is extremely porous by nature, and it will soak up any oils you put on it – and that includes popcorn grease, lotion and the natural body oils that we all have on our skin.   You won’t notice any damage at first, but oils can cause some real trouble down the road.

The nitty gritty

When oil gets on your furniture, it is soaked into the back side of the leather – the part you can’t see.  Then, eventually it ends up saturating broader areas as it naturally fills up from back to front over time.  Once oil saturates the leather, you end up with ugly oil spots on the surface, like in this photo.  It isn’t pretty, that’s for sure

Prevent oil spots on leather

There are two key things you can do to prevent oil spots on leather.

1. Clean and protect leather 3 to 4 times a year.

You get rid of the dirt and oil still sitting on the surface of your furniture when you clean it, preventing it from eventually soaking in.  A good protection cream will fill in the gaps and spaces in the original top coat of your leather as it gets worn down. . . continue reading!!!

Debunking Myths: Frequently recommended leather remedies that ruin leather

Have a problem with your leather and not sure how to fix it?  Getting different pieces of advice everywhere you turn?  Here are a handful of so-called “leather remedies” that will do you more harm than good.  There is a lot of misinformation out there. Keep these tips in mind and you won’t turn a minor problem into a major one!

Good Rule of Thumb

The best way to remember what you can and can’t use on your leather is to keep this in mind: The two most commonly used chemicals that will cause severe damage to your leather are alcohol and acetone. Stay away from products that contain these substances at all costs, regardless of what you read online.

Common “Remedies” that ruin leather:

1. Fingernail polish remover – Do not attempt to use fingernail polish remover to get a stain or mark off your leather.  Fingernail polish contains acetone, which removes all color from leather, creating a large bleached looking spot around the area where it is applied.

2. Window cleaner – Many people group Windex and other window cleaners in the “harmless cleaner” category.  While these cleaners are often mild, they still contain alcohol that ruins the top coat on leather furniture.

3. Markers – Using a similar colored marker in attempt to conceal a problem in your leather is likely to make the problem area worse and even more noticeable.  It is darn near impossible to find a marker that will match your leather dye well, and the ink itself can be damaging. Many leathers have what is called a sauvage, or marbled-looking, finish that you will never be able to recreate with a marker.

4. Shoe polish – Remember this, the leather on your shoes is tanned differently from the leather on your furniture.  Furniture leather will not accept or soak up shoe polish in same the way that shoe leather does because it is made differently.  Shoe polish will just make a gunky mess on your furniture and on the pants of everyone who sits there.

5. Hair Spray – Some sources swear by hair spray to remove stains and marks on your leather. This is definitely a bad idea. There are a couple major problems with hair spray.  First, most hair spray contains alcohol that damages leather (see #2). Second, hair spray is not very effective for removing marks, and its sticky residue collects more dirt and dust, causing further problems and discoloration in many cases.

6. Disposable cleaning supplies such as disinfectant wipes or pre-wet sponges.  The vast majority of these contain alcohol and are a bad idea. We don’t recommend that you use these items, but if you decide to do it, make sure you read the label and are absolutely certain there in no alcohol in the product.

So, what should I use?

The best substance to use on leather is cleaner made specifically for that purpose.  For more information see our instructional video:

How to fix scratches in leather furniture

One of the most common problems with leather furniture is scratching. Fortunately, surface scratches on leather are pretty easy to take care of.

What you need to know:

Most leather furniture is made of fully-finished leather that does not scratch easily.  It has a surface coating that prevents the type of minor surface scratches that are so often a problem on less durable types of leather, like semi-aniline or aniline.  If you experience minor scratching on your aniline leather, use the following information to remedy the problem.  If your fully-finished or semi-aniline leather has been scratched, it is likely scratched too deeply for this method to be effective, and you may need to call a professional.

What kind of leather do I have?

Materials: Hair dryer

Directions:

Turn on the hair dryer and use it to warm the surface of the leather where the scratch is.  Use your hands to gently massage the leather.  This should bring the dyes installed at the tannery back to the surface and reduce the appearance of the surface scratch. . . continue reading!

Types of leather: Must-know info for buying leather

My customers are confused about different types of leather – either because they aren’t sure what they should look for when it comes time to buy new furniture, or because they have a problem (like a scratch or stain) that needs to be fixed. This quick guide should help you understand the big picture. If you have other questions, leave them in the comments below!

1. Fully-Finished Leather:
Fully-finished leather, seen frequently in furniture brands like Lazy Boy, Palliser, Natuzzi and Elite as well as in automotive interiors, has a durable surface finish that resists scratches and staining. Fully-finished leathers make up approximately 85% of leather used for furniture and 99% of leather used in the automotive industry today.

If you have kids, pets or messy guests, Fully-finished leather is the way to go. If you have a spill on fully-finished leather, just clean it up quickly with a damp rag and wipe dry with a dry towel – simple as that. . . continue reading!

How to Clean Leather Furniture

Your leather couch is an expensive investment, and you need to treat it right if you want it to last. Think about it like preventative maintenance on   your car. You change your oil to keep your car running smoothly.  To keep your leather couch in good shape, you need to protect it and clean it regularly. Did you know that a leather couch will last 3 times as long if you clean and protect it regularly?

Here are the top questions we get on how to maintain and care for leather furniture the right way:

How often and Why?

We recommend that you clean and condition your whole couch twice a year.  Clean the parts you use the most (the head and armrest of your favorite spot, for example) 3 to 4 times a year.

Leather is very porous, so it soaks up the dirt and oils from our skin very easily.  Even before you can see the effects of this damage, the leather is collecting the dirt and oil it soaks up on the back side of the leather.  Once there is enough on the back side, it will eventually seep to the front and form little dark spots like in this photo... read more on source!
