For forty years, Hank Weinstein excelled as a top level manager in the food service distribution industry, moving throughout Texas managing multimillion dollar companies and leading hundreds of employees. It was a fine career for him and his family (Hank is the proud father of six daughters), and satisfying enough. But Weinstein is not one to settle for “enough” — he always had a desire to leave the corporate world and apply his skills towards an enterprise that would give him greater fulfillment. He’d reached as high as he could possibly go in his career, but was not ready to dial in his retirement.
Thinking he’d purchase a fast food/casual brick and mortar franchise, Weinstein serendipitously came upon Fibrenew, the leader of leather, plastic and vinyl restoration and repair, after unintentionally filling out an application for exploration — an occurrence he couldn’t be more happy with. “The more and more I talked with the franchise development coordinator, Bob Johnston, the more positive our talks became,” he laughs. “What got me even more interested in Fibrenew was how Bob got my wife involved.” Weinstein explains that after decades of moving around and busting his butt for large corporations, having a family-centric franchise to his name made better sense as the exploration progressed. Having Johnson include Tammy, Weinstein’s wife of 22 years, in these discussions was a big component of his transition to Fibrenew.
That, and meeting other Fibrenew entrepreneurs. Weinstein did a ride along with Craig Burton of Fibrenew Metro Austin and really got the day-to-day feel of how to tackle a territory, handle the administration and apply the patented hands-on techniques Fibrenew customers appreciate. “I rode along to see how he did it all. We did a few jobs together, and he had me on the spray guns, and I was texturizing … and I thought, ‘Hey, I really like this!’” Continue reading here!

Couple’s Franchise Success Story with Fibrenew
We recently interviewed Stephanie and Warren Rosenthal, the dynamic husband and wife team behind Fibrenew’s successful Indianapolis Metro North franchise. Stephanie and Warren have been happily married for 23 years. When they’re not busy providing top-notch repair service for a growing, upper market clientele, the couple homeschool their two teenagers, and still find time for weekly outdoor adventures like hiking and kayaking. Joining the Fibrenew family is not this couple’s first entrepreneurial effort either–they previously owned a window cleaning business in the same region. If you wonder what it takes to share the responsibility of running a business as a couple, while retaining the ability to put time with family first, you’ll definitely want to check out Stephanie and Warren’s story:
Finding Fibrenew
When asked how they first became aware of Fibrenew, Warren recounts how he was in the middle of a career change. He had acquired his real estate licence, and after a little while realized it wasn’t quite the right fit. They were also doing some investing and fixing up rental properties at that point. Approaching their anniversary, they decided to treat themselves by fixing up their torn Natuzzi leather sofa. When the Fibrenew technician came out to service it, they were intrigued and asked lots questions about the business model. Warren dug a little bit deeper with some online research and discovered their region was an available Fibrenew territory. They did their homework and before long it was clear they had a new calling.
Challenges Along the Way
To their advantage, the Rosenthals had an existing knack for running a service-based business from their time working in residential window cleaning. However, taking on Fibrenew’s product knowledge was a bit daunting at the start. There was plenty of information to digest–everything from color matching to organizing their first shipment of supplies. It was challenging, but exciting too, and they got the hang of it all pretty quickly. Warren had received his technical training at this stage, but Stephanie had not. Her training turned out to be of a more direct nature. She learned the trade by observing Warren at work. Now she can readily answer any customer’s question when she’s fielding inquiries and setting up appointments. Read more of the story here!

It’s Earth Day, Everyday at Fibrenew
On the 47th Anniversary of Earth Day, we want to take a moment to mention how happy we are to provide our repair services to a variety of private consumers and professionals. In doing so, we’re helping divert a huge amount furniture from landfills. Today’s society tends to encourage disposing of goods almost as fast as we can buy them; continually upgrading to the latest and greatest gadgets, so it’s easy to lose sight of how this mentality can impact the health of our planet. At Fibrenew, we’re proud to prove, that yes, it’s still possible to repair our valued possessions, rather than discard them at the first hint of wear and tear.
Okay, How Much Waste Are We Talking About?
According to the United States EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), households are filling up the landfills with discarded furniture at an astonishing rate. In a 2009 report, it was found that furniture is last on the list of household goods to be recycled – making up a total of 9.8 million tons (yes, tons!) of waste. We don’t have accurate global reports at the moment, but if the U.S. is any indication, a major change is clearly necessary. Similarly, reports indicate that office furniture is discarded at an equally staggering rate. These numbers bring to light that economic fluctuations in businesses like relocation, closures, and upgrades all have an environmental impact that should be managed carefully. At minimum, we need to make sure we’re pursuing recycling and repair options, at home, and in our businesses. After all, technology has given us everything we need to make more sustainable choices such as restoring damaged goods – and all it takes is sending an email or making a quick phone call.
Going Green Since 1987
Three decades ago, when Fibrenew was getting started, “going green” was a less commonly used phrase. Looking back, you could say that we were one of the original green companies. We impact everyone from individual consumers, to large enterprises; offering an alternative to replacing their damaged leather, plastic, and vinyl. Restoration is not only great for reducing environmental impact, it’s a measurable time and money-saver. In the time it takes to shop for a new piece of furniture and schedule its delivery, we can readily get one of our technicians out to your home or business for a repair job.
“Leather, plastic and vinyl everywhere becomes damaged at some point in its life-cycle. It’s in homes, offices, clinics, hospitals, boats, planes, trains and automobiles–you name it. Fibrenew helps customers save money, time, and the environment by restoring damaged items…Everybody wins.”- Michael Wilson, CEO, Fibrenew. Read more of the article here!

Franchise Success Story: Lynn & Rick Halpin of Fibrenew Upstate
This month, we caught up with Fibrenew power couple, Lynn and Rick Halpin for a chat. We checked in with the husband and wife team to learn how they got on board as franchise owners back in 2009 and how they’ve been running their business in the mean time. The Halpin’s business took off (despite the downward economy at the time) and has been growing ever since–a true entrepreneurial success story. Lynn and Rick had the option to handpick their preferred location, and chose to open up South Carolina’s first-ever Fibrenew in the Easley area. Easley, just west of Greenville, is one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. The two happily share the wisdom they’ve picked up along their way, and talk about the benefits and flexibility their investment has afforded them. If you’re considering a franchise of any kind, or even joining the Fibrenew family, we invite you to read on!
Finding Fibrenew
Out of university in the 1970s, and armed with a Biology-Chemistry degree, Rick went to work in South Carolina’s booming textile industry. He became a management trainee at a global textile manufacturer, working his way up to VP of Operations, overseeing the North American and Asian markets. The job brought him and the family to many new places; including a stretch of time in beautiful Melbourne, Australia. Years in the field of dyeing and finishing textiles helped him amass ample knowledge of color and color matching. His expertise has been handy, since distinguishing colors is essential to running a successful leather repair business. Though you don’t necessarily need to have 15+ years experience in textiles to run a Fibrenew franchise, it certainly hasn’t hasn’t hurt!
Lynn, started her professional journey in South Carolina as well, working as an Executive Assistant to the VP of Sales and Marketing for a medical-surgical company. She spent much of her time organizing events and conventions, and stayed busy even when the family moved to Australia. They were raising two children at this point, and she cheerfully jokes about being the family’s “tourism director” while abroad. She put her planning and organizational skills to good use volunteering with the philanthropic American Women’s Association, coordinating major fundraisers for the Royal Children’s Hospital. Eventually, they returned to the U.S., taking up residence in Raleigh, North Carolina. At the time, Lynn was the sole-proprietor of a restaurant-advertising business which she was actively managing up until just recently.
“Everybody will need the services of a company like Fibrenew in their life, probably multiple times.”
– Rick Halpin
Franchise Owner, Fibrenew Upstate
Rick was contemplating his next career step, when a colleague asked if he’d ever considered investing in a franchise. They attended to a tradeshow together, and Fibrenew was there. Though Rick looked at other franchises, he kept returning to the Fibrenew business model–as he aptly puts it “Everybody will need the services of a company like Fibrenew in their life, probably multiple times.” One weekend, while Rick was in Calgary for a training session designed for new franchise owners, Lynn was busy back home, working to sell their house. To their delight, it sold immediately after its first showing. It seemed like everything was falling into place, and they took the quick sale of the house as a positive sign about their new direction... more of the interview here!

(Podcast) What Does it Take to Become a Fibrenew Franchisee?
With quick regard on the surface, one might think that a natural transition from the hustle and bustle of corporate America’s IT, communications and sales world into the role of owning a mobile service franchise business specializing in leather, plastic and vinyl restoration does not exist, but JT Thompson proves that assumption wrong.
Thompson is the proud owner / operator of Fibrenew Nashville Metro, a business that is thriving and expanding because of his due diligence, commitment to craftsmanship and good old fashioned hard work.
“[Twenty years in middle management] was fine,” he says. “It was my ‘job.’ But as the adage goes, ‘If you do for a living what you enjoy you’ll never work a day in your life,’ I had to make a big decision.” So, after his corporate position was phased out how did Thompson take control of his future?
Before Owning Fibrenew Nashville Metro, JT Thompson Had Two Advantages:
First, he understood himself and his talents well. “I love working with my hands. Old world craftsmanship is a passion of mine,” he explains. In fact, he first came across the Fibrenew brand as he was working on an old BMW with leather seats in need of attention. A quick Google search in his area resulted in no formative leads, but he did come across one name many times — .... more of the article here!

How to Prevent Cracked Leather Furniture
To be totally honest, if aniline or semi-aniline upholstery leather cracks, it’s often too far gone to be worth repairing. Now, this is not always the case, but when these leathers crack, it’s usually the result of problems that have been neglected or unnoticed for a long, long time. Fully-finished leather is different, though. Check out another of our blog posts for explanations of the most common types of upholstery leather.
Cracking of fully-finished leather is actually a very common problem that leather restoration experts can easily fix, but like most things with leather furniture, it’s easier (and cheaper) to take care of the problem before it really becomes a problem.
Why does leather crack?
Our estimate is that 95% of cracking in fully-finished leather starts with one of these two culprits:
1. A manufacturer problem – To make fully-finished leather, manufacturers put a layer of dye and a protective top coating on the hide almost like paint goes on drywall. Leather has a lot of give and will stretch and move as people sit and slide around on it. If the manufacturer doesn’t stretch the leather properly before they put on the dye and protective top coating, the leather will quickly stretch more than the dye can handle, and the coating will crack.
2. Body oil and dirt – Leather is incredibly porous, and it soaks up oil whenever it touches it. Believe it or not, the most common source of these problems is you from your own bare arms, legs, neck and hair. Dirt also gets soaked into the top coating on leather as it gets worn down. As you sit, stand and move around, that dirt and oil becomes abrasive, and it breaks down surface dye which will eventually lead to visible cracks at the surface.
Prevent Leather from Cracking:
There are two key things you can do to prevent cracking of fully-finished leather.
1. Clean and protect leather 3 to 4 times a year. You get rid of the dirt and oil still sitting on the surface of your furniture when you clean it, preventing it from eventually soaking in. A good protection cream will fill in the gaps and spaces in the original top coat of your leather as it gets worn down. By filing those gaps with protection cream, you remove the possibility that they can be filled with dirt and oil later – sort of like putting out the fire before it starts.
2. Avoid exposure to excessive amounts of dirt and body oil. The fact of the matter is that if you use your leather furniture at all, it is going to be exposed to some body oil and some dirt and dust that simply come with the territory. But, you can limit the damage of normal wear and tear. You should avoid sleeping on your leather furniture regularly or sitting down if you come in sweaty and dirty from outside. Also, if you are wearing sunscreen or have greasy popcorn hands, use the less expensive seats in the house. It’s a good idea to try to cover your leather in areas that see a lot of dirt and oil if you can. Try tossing a blanket over the headrest of a leather recliner you know you are going to rest your head on frequently or for extended periods of time.
Repair Cracked Leather:
Once leather has been cracked, there isn’t much you can do for it yourself, but a professional can either re-dye it or replace parts of the piece, depending on the extent of the damage, to eliminate the problem.
Additional Questions?
We’d be happy to answer any additional questions you have. Please ask in the comments below! If you want to show us a photo of a specific piece of leather, either post it on our Facebook page or contact your local franchisee.

How One Man Googled His Way to Owning a Fibrenew Business
You really can use Google to find anything you want. Jeff Butler can attest. Not too long ago, after realizing the need for a new career and life direction, Butler decided to type “mobile franchises under $100,000” into the search engine and see what happened. After carefully evaluating his options, Butler narrowed it down to Fibrenew, the market leaders in leather, plastic and vinyl restoration, and founded Fibrenew Central Arizona.
In order to establish his new business, Butler dedicated two weeks to the Fibrenew training program in Calgary. “It was great,” he says. “Everyone from Fibrenew is super nice and helpful. It’s a great organization to be part of.” The training program was intense, and although Butler admits it was a lot of information to absorb in such a relatively short period (ranging from techniques to product information to general business advice), he found the subsequent Fibrenew Apprenticeship Program to be a valuable component to getting Fibrenew Central Arizona up and running. “The nice thing about the Apprenticeship Program is that you can go home, go on your iPad and see the information you’re looking for and review the videos you need instead of worrying about not being able to remember what they told us in training,” he explains. “And if I can’t find what I’m looking for, the Fibrenew support team is only a phone call away.”
Prior to the initial training, Butler shadowed fellow Fibrenew franchisee owner Dan Hoffman, owner of Fibrenew Portland, for two days. That’s when he knew he’d made a smart decision to invest in his own business. “At the end of day one, I saw Dan writing up the invoices from the day and remember thinking, ‘Not bad for a day’s work!’” Butler laughs.
Being a new business, Butler’s start-up phase consists of hard work, planning and a go-get-’em attitude. “There’s no such thing as a typical day for me,” he notes. “A lot of times I’ll line up my day, but then by noon I’ve altered it already! I like that. I like being able to just go with the flow and plan my day as it happens.”
Butler has always been drawn to the “hands-on” sort of work — he has a lengthy background in the auto industry, ranging from service technician right up to service director. Because of his vast background in the automotive industry, Butler is naturally drawn to the services he can provide to the numerous used car, RV and boat dealerships in his area. Fibrenew Central Arizona tackles every sort of restoration and refurbishing a client requires — including residential and commercial contracts — but Butler expects the automotive contracts to be the largest component to his clientele.
“One of the best parts of Fibrenew is being hands-on, being able to be the person who directs daily activities, makes sure the work is accomplished correctly, being able to interact with customers. It’s a much better environment than being stuck in a cubicle,” Butler says.

Texan Makes His Move & Purchases Existing Fibrenew Franchise
When Elliot Berk took over the Fibrenew Northeast San Antonio franchise, he was prepared to jump in full steam ahead. “It was nice to have built-in business already, but …” he pauses and laughs, “you have to be prepared to play catch up. My advice for people taking over an existing franchise: the first few months you’re going to spend a lot of hours catching up. But the more prepared you are at the start the better off you’ll be in the long run.”
It was inevitable that Berk would become an business owner. He worked years for an oil company, loading and discharging barges. The six-days-a-week, 12-hours-a-day shifts were pretty tough on the Berk family. He also has a diverse background in the hospitality industry, so was looking for a career shift that would allow him more freedom for family time as well as more customer service and one-on-one interaction.

He also has a diverse background in the hospitality industry, so was looking for a career shift that would allow him more freedom for family time as well as more customer service and one-on-one interaction.
So an online search led Berk to the Fibrenew website, where he was intrigued with the possibility of owning his own leather, plastic and vinyl restoration company. Shortly after filling out some forms, Berk found himself on a ride-along with now fellow franchisee, Craig Burton of Fibrenew Metro Austin. “We were discussing the possibilities to be had with Fibrenew, the demographics, incomes, stuff like that. That was a big seller.” As it turns out, Fibrenew Northeast San Antonio was for sale at the time, so Berk made his move.
The transition also means moving cities: Berk’s wife is still living in Corpus Christi, where he commutes to each weekend, but they will soon be completing the move to Schertz. “San Antonio is the fifth largest city in the U.S. It’s growing leaps and bounds,” Berk remarks of the potential his franchise has. With a large residential market, he’s also breaking into the restaurant and RV industries. “Now that I’ve been doing this for a while, I am actually getting a taste of where I can go with it.”
It’s been a lot of change for the Berks, but it’s all positive. “Everyone I talk to at Fibrenew is just as excited about this as I am,” Berk says. “Every time I call with a question, I get an answer — someone’s always there.” In fact, when reflecting on his training at Fibrenew’s head office in Calgary, Berk says he was impressed with the overall attitude of the entire Fibrenew team. “The enthusiasm everyone has… the belief everyone has for what we are doing, it’s unbelievable. I try to expend that enthusiasm at my level also.”

What Does a Parmesan Chicken Sandwich and a Leather Sofa Have in Common?
Making the leap from the kitchen to owning his own mobile leather, plastic and vinyl restoration business with Fibrenew isn’t as far-fetched as it sounds. Carrigan says as a chef, he put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into his work, but what he really wanted was do invest that into something for himself. He had been looking into a several different franchise opportunities when a broker approached him offering assistance. Fibrenew was one of the options presented, and the more Carrigan thought about it the more he was attracted to the low buy-in, low overhead and mobile vs. brick-and-mortar concept.
Carrigan met and spoke to a few other franchisee owners in the south Florida area before attending the Fibrenew Training Program. “The support for franchisees is huge!” he comments. “I noticed that right away. Plus, as a chef I like things neat and organized and clean and tidy — and I could tell by the training facility everything was buttoned up.”
Fibrenew North Naples has a fairly diversified market. Carrigan has dabbled in the marine industry, built quite a following with the classic car crowd, and earned a large portion of the residential market. “It’s a older community, but well balanced. I’ve done golf carts to golf canopies to steering wheels to pontoons boats to couches,” he says. Carrigan suggests to other new franchisees that earning contracts with warranty companies — as he did — is a great way to spread awareness about the Fibrenew brand and fill time slots with revenue-earning appointments.
Carrigan is the first to acknowledge he’s a firm believer in karma, and perhaps this is why his Fibrenew business has taken off the way it has. “I’m not going to lie: I’ve turned down jobs where I could easily just take someone’s money, knowing they could fix it for less themselves. But I don’t want my name to have a blemish. Just be honest, have integrity, show up, return phone calls. Throw it out to the universe and it’ll come back to you.”
Today, as owner of his very own business, Carrigan enjoys the work/life balance he’s settled in to. He hangs out with his son, stays active with jogging and soccer, and tends to his home’s yard more now that he has flexibility in his schedule. Sounds like the delicious balance!
